1997 ITF World Dj Competition / Montclair

The ITF 97 World DJ Comp. was one of the best competitions I've been to. This was when DJ Craze just hit the scene and the rest is history. Sinista, Roc Raida, Rholi Rho, DoBoy, Dj Riz, Crazy Legs, and Dj Slyce from Teaneck were just a few of the people that showed up. I can't remember who won but Dj Slyce and Craze definitely did their thing.

Montclair State University always has some good hip hop shows and the one I went to was amazing. Dead Prez, Cocoa Brovaz, El Da Sensei, Pumpkinhead, Shabaam...what more can u ask for? It was cool cuz after the show we got to meet with Dead Prez and Smif N Wessun. My friend who's white HAD to ask Dead Prez why they hate white people...wow that was akward! They gave him the little .. oh we don't hate white people, this and that. They were pretty cool though. And Smif N Wessun were just outside after the show chillin. Just walking the campus like they were students. We said whatup and poly'd for a minute and that was it.

Here are some pictures from the ITF Competition.

For those unfamiliar with Encite:

Jason "Encite" Hortillas is the general manager of the grassroots artist collective known as Guerrilla Words. For the past five years he has been primarily dealing with booking, marketing and promotions with the organization, collaborating with various companies and independent artists. Guerrilla::Words has extended into the college radio game as well where he served as an on air personality until the end of 2006. As a co-host alongside GW's founder Brian Buno, Encite extended his role as event host with notable events such as the 2004 Rap Attack CMJ Showcase, the 2005 DMC New York Regionals, MTV Chi's Launch Party in 2006 and Scion Boston's 2007 event. Encite's roots however come back to the art of being an emcee, where he honed his skills. Publicly performing since 1998, first with the group AIC and later with First Division, he performed all over the Northeast on and off for almost a decade. He has also provided his hypeman skills for artists such as Chan, Naturel & Money Management producer Illmind.

Now taking on a different role as the new booking agent for Fuzion Entertainment, he applies everything he has learned over the years while maintaining a love for the music. "Although I'm not a full time musician as I used to be, I allocate each aspect of my experience to new artists who I feel can be a force in this industry," says Encite.

So for one of those rare occasions, Encite grabs the mic again. Similar to a prize fighter making the fateful return to the ring, Encite in typical dramatic fashion returns with his arrogant yet reflective style for at least one more time.

The Firm @ HMV

The worst! My friends and I waited for 3hrs to meet the Firm when they dropped their album and security said it's a wrap! We were fuckin pissed! We are about to bounce and then the pigs started putting up road blocks right next to me.. next thing u know...Nas and AZ come out the side door. It was crazy. Nature was already in the jeep and people were hanging off the car! I got to see Nas in Central Park but that was years later. AZ I see on the regular around my way. Funny thing was we were in Bank of America and we were both mesmerized that they charge a $3.00 ATM fee. I just thought it was funny cuz he's in a Range and iced out compaining bout 3 bucks! (I had a bunch of other pics but they came out kinda shitty) "is that Horse..it must be I heard he husky"

South Central to Harlem

Ice T at the NY auto show I think 2006. I didn't even see Coco...I know it's hard to miss her but Ice was in a rush and I didn't want to be an asshole and be like...oh can u stand here and this and that. The other pic is Jim Jones at Best Buy in Paramus, NJ. I said what up and shit but he was more focused on his chips and in the pic...he's about to reach down and grab a box of Nerds..LOL. I do have to say though..I was kinda star struck..kinda more than when I met Russ or Ice T. I don't even like Jim Jones that much but at that time Ballin was a hit.

Mommy...what's a GRAVEDIGGA???

Gravediggaz were signing graphs at Fatbeats in NY when they dropped the second album. I thought RZA and Prince Paul were gonna be there but I guess they had something better to do. I was pissed!!! But Fru and Poetic were down to earth and I was happy to be able to meet some old school cats. RIP Poetic aka Da Grym Reaper.

Russell and Kimora

So my roomates and I are about to meet up with some girls from FIT and we see a forest green bentley drive by..back in the late 90's...not many people were riding bentleys. Then as we walk by a lil deli...the car pulls right up to us and some big dude gets out...then Russ and Kimora stepped out...Straight up we were all star-struck. Kimora looked bangin back then and Russ looked older than he does now. He went into the deli to get a lil bottle of ginseng(wonder for what??hmmm?). He came out and gave us autographs...I remember Kimora sayin..."why you shaking so much?" to russell. Cool thing was Russ sayin " oh shit...u got the old phat farm business card." cuz that was when only a few people were rocking that shit.

Play Your Cards Right.

Remember Royal Flush? He was signing graphs at Harlem Music Hut on Chambers St. I was in there buying mixtapes and he showed up. I think I was the only person in there..but whatever. This was the time right after Iced down medallions dropped...me and my roomates used to blast that track heavy in the dorms. The album wasn't that bad...I liked it..Worldwide is the joint too.

One last thing about EPMD.

How do you go from Eric and Parish Making Dollars to Eric and Parish Millenium Ducketts? Millenium Ducketts?????U got to be kiddin me.

Reedin Is Fuhndamentul!

Here are 2 books you need to get..Also check out a book called Liner Notes which breaks down various hip hop tracks one by one by the artists themselves.

Mos Vect

Mos Def outside of Sam Goody for the EPMD album signing. Yea I look like an idiot! PS...I wish I had a chance to say whatup to Big Pun who was outside signing autographs. He wasn't well known at that time...only featured on Joe's album at this time, but did get to see him perform later at Twilo I think.

More EPMD Back In Business Pictures

Here are just a few more pics from the signing.

EPMD Back in Business album signing Sam Goody '97

EPMD just got back together and released Back in Business. Had a bunch of nice tracks like the joint, richter scale, KIM, and never seen before to name a few. Since I was going to school at Pace in lower Manhattan, I got a chance to meet them briefly. They seemed disinterested the whole time but they were cool. I guess they were tired of giving autographs all day. Keith Murray was there and he looked high as hell. LOD!!! Mos Def was also outside the store as well as Heltah Skeltah. I got to meet Mos but unfortunately I didn't get a chance to meet w/ Ruck n Rock. I did get to see Rock and Ruck perform later on but as solo artists.

CRU @ Downtime July 29th 1997

2 of my friends went with me to see C.R.U. at Downtime. We were the only asians at the show and let me tell you we stuck out like a mafucka. The show was pretty sick though. They kept chanting "Free Mighty Ha" all night and played most of their joints from The Dirty 30. Below are pics of Yogi and Chad.

Rewind.....

First things first. My name is Calvin, I'm 28yrs old, Korean, and a hip hop junkie. I posted a bunch of pics of the shows I went to on http://www.nobodysmiling.com/ and they suggested I make a blog or something. So about 5 months later here I am. I'm basically going to post up a bunch of pics/videos/audio and randomness of shows i've been to, people i've met. Peacepeace.
